Social photo sharing is currently one of the hottest services out there. Instagram and Pinterest are immensely popular and excellent for sharing pictures but what if these services began to offer more than just sharing? What if the images you were sharing were also proof of your new healthy habits or most recent endeavors? Leap aims to give you a platform for your achievements as “the first mobile app for social group challenges.”

Currently in its final stages of development, Leap combines what is essentially a photo-sharing service and a gamified challenge system with Facebook integration. One potential way of using Leap is challenging your Facebook friends to eat a healthy breakfast for 7 days. Take a photo of your egg white omelet and share it through Leap to start the challenge. Friends or strangers can then participate in the challenge by taking their own picture to match yours. The Leap team believes that competition is the best way to push people to try new and interesting things with their friends. Competitions naturally happen all the time among circles of friends and Leap acts a service to fuel this organic process with points and leaderboards. There could even be potential for increasing brand engagement with Leap — I  asked Leap how their app could be used for own Gamification Summit and they proposed three challenges to engage event attendees:

  1.  Startup Scavenger: Meet 3 different startups and snap a picture with them.
  2. Most Swag Challenge: collect the most goodies from all the booths.
  3. Networking Pro: Collect the most business cards from fellow attendees
The image to the right is how these challenges would look like on the application. Users in the challenge have the ability to vote and judge whether pictures posted to Leap are fair-game.  Perhaps we will have our own challenges ready for the Gamification Summit!
