Gamification of the Wedding Dinner Table

Marriage is a beautiful thing…so is the open bar at the wedding. I was at a wedding this past weekend in Long Island (Congrats again Mara & Andrew!!) where we played a little game at the table–we’ll call it gamification of the wedding dinner table.

While everyone was sitting down before the salad was served, the DJ got on the mic and asked an unusual question of the guests. As he interrupted the music, he asked that the person sitting on the end pass their napkin around the table like it was a hot potato. Our first reaction to this was…where did this fool come from…and if I were the bride and groom, I’d be getting Pandora or Spotify ready on my phone! To not create a scene, everyone played along. After the first revolution, people started passing the napkin faster and faster as though it was a used snot rag. It started to become fun.

After about 3 revolutions, the DJ said “STOP!” The person with the napkin at our table was super upset that she ended up with it. The rest of the table chuckled. Then, the DJ said to pass the napkin to the person to the left. Everyone at the table laughed again except the the person who now held the napkin. Once again, the DJ said to pass the napkin to the person sitting across the table. After some more laughter, the DJ announced in the mic that the person who ended up with the napkin just won the center piece. Turns out that the snotty hot potato was actually a delicious plate of sweet potato fries. The game lightened up the guests, put lots of smiles on people’s faces and rewarded a few of the folks. Clever for a wedding.
