Drupal, a free and open source content management system (CMS), has most recently been gamified using Badgeville’s successful behavioral platform. Drupal is used by 2.1% of all websites, and they are looking to increase engagement and use of their open source products. Hoping to increase loyalty, satisfaction, and retention, Drupal wants to maximize desired behavior such as creating discussions, replying to user submitted questions, and communicating over blogs.

Badgeville has incorporated their engagement solutions to what they say is the first integration of gamification, behavioral platforms, and Drupal. Although it is the first integration of its kind, Badgeville has said that their customers have reported a 20-200% increase in user engagement. As an example, the Mother Nature Network, a website dedicated to sustainability awareness, has cited significant increase in website traffic due to Badgeville’s behavioral platform. The secret behind the platform is the use of points, achievements, levels, missions, contests, leaderboards, and notifications. An added mechanism is the “anti-gaming” mechanism. This limits the amount of times certain desired behavior is rewarded. This is the first time I’ve heard of this mechanism, and I eagerly await the upcoming editions of Badgeville’s platform. Welcome to the gamified community, Drupal!
