The Application of Game Based Learning in Business

The concept of game based learning was developed around ten years ago, and it has become a very popular one in various circles. A very good example of this is in business.

Traditionally, business has been associated with boredom, since most of the things done in the name of business are basically routine. This means that there is a lot of room for one to lose their focus and drive especially if they have to do repetitive tasks. Doing training in business also poses challenges to many, since it usually involves the use of very abstract concepts and terms.

However, gamification has changed this in the recent past. Today, there are many businesses that use game based learning as a platform for engaging with employees, particularly during training.

According to a Forbes article:

“when designed correctly, gamification has proven to be very successful in engaging people and motivating them to change behaviours, develop skills or solve problems”

There are a number of reasons why this form of training is gaining a lot of popularity including:

  • It’s engaging: all games require the players to actively participate in the process. When you turn your training into a game-based activity, it makes it easier for everyone involved to participate full.
  • It’s stimulating: when training only involves distribution of information, it can be very boring to many. However, when gamification is used for training, it makes people think more critically of what they are doing and the information they are getting. This in turn increases the chances of them retaining what they learn.
  • It’s a fun activity: the fact that gaming is a lot of fun for most people means that they are more likely to look forward to it. As the business owner, this means that trainings will be more readily accepted and even anticipated.

As you can see, there is a lot of room for use of game based learning in any business. For it to be successful, however, there are a number of things that need to be done. The most important of these is to find the right products to use for the training. Fortunately, there are a number of companies that offer excellent products for this, so you don’t need to worry much about access to such products. The only thing you need to do is ensure that you pick one that is consistent with your goals. At Gamification Co, we strive to help you do this while at the same time making sure that you don’t have to spend a lot of money in the process.

  1. Thank you for your post! I truly believe that Informal learning is something that will become increasingly more popular in 2014. Have you heard about the 70:20: 10 model? In a nutshell, the model relates to three forms of organizational learning according to their proportion in achieving competencies: Informal learning by experience and practice (70%), social experiences (20%) and formal learning (10%).
