The way students learn is changing. The skill sets required to succeed in the 21 st century are changing. Educators are wondering how to effectively prepare students for today’s world. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, along with other partners, have granted $10.3 million to fund the Games, Learning, and Assessment Lab—GLASS Lab—a new initiative focused on solving this question through gamification. Managed by the Institute of Play and based at Electronic Art’s global headquarters in Redwood City, CA, the lab aims to discover what engages today’s students, how to measure learning in game environments, and what game elements create strong learning environments. The goal is to prepare this generation’s students for the collegiate world and beyond by speaking their language—digital media and video games. For more information check out the full press release at the Institute of Play’s website.

  1. Sad to see it affiliated with EA which has not had an educational arm / experience and it is tied to old/outdated business models.

    • While it is on EA’s campus, it is only one of the five partners (The Entertainment Software Association, Electronic Arts, Educational Testing Service, SRI International, and Autodesk) who are managing the GLASS program. Judging the previous work of the Institute of Play, I have faith this will result in some amazing educational products in the future.
