Perhaps taking a note from Jesse Redniss and Peter Blacker’s GSummit Presentation, Degrassi is rolling out a live-TV gamification program in conjunction with their season premier 12. The over-the-top teen drama has found issues maintaining live viewership due to the rising numbers of people pirating their shows. To combat this issue, the show’s producer Much Music has created a new loyalty program dubbed MuchCloser using Badgeville’s gamification platform. MuchCloser will allow live viewers to earn points while the show is live by interacting on social media, reading blog posts, or commenting about the show to earn virtual badges, concert tickets, and even a chance to meet the cast. MuchCloser’s  loyalty program has seen strong success thus far. Their initial iteration of the program for their annual Much Music Awards attracted 40,000 users, 1/3 of their registered user base.

According to information by Nielsen in Redniss and Blacker’s presentation,  27% of Americans said they simultaneously use their smartphones while watching TV several times a day. As the combination of mobile and television is becoming increasingly prevalent as a means of engaging with TV viewers, this trend may soon find itself to become ubiquitous in all live media. Much Music has stated it has plans to roll out this program for Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl in the future.
