Gamifying Electoral Turnout

I recently wrote an article for my Huffington Post column about how to use gamification to raise voter turnout, called “Rethinking Elections with Gamification.” Dismayed by the huge expense of the US federal election and the continued abysmally low turnout among voters, I thought there has to be something we can do to improve a system where the parties spent $50,000 per voter this past cycle. In a nutshell, I propose that we could use gamification to raise turnout by:

  1. Creating a Voter Progress Systems
  2. Making Voting More Visible
  3. Sharing Friend’s Voting Stats
  4. Adopting Voters in Disenfranchised Places
  5. Instituting a Voter Lottery

Do you have ideas you think you work? Check out my article on the HuffPo and feel free to join a discussion on either site about ways you think we could make the current system more engaging and fair.
