Red haired funny man, Conan O’Brien, recently introduced Late Night TV to Gamification with the unveiling of his new Team Coco tablet app. As Conan puts it, “Up until this moment your life has had little meaning, but I’m here to change all that. I’m here to present the incredible Team Coco tablet app.”
By far, the coolest element of the Team Coco app is the inclusion of a sync feature which utilizes the tablet’s microphone to “listen” to where the viewer is in the show and uses that audio data to deliver synchronized, exclusive content associated with the TBS show in real-time. With the sync feature users can see bonus behind the scenes footage and commentary related to the episode they are watching. There are also trivia questions and social elements, including the ability to interact with other viewers.
Another cool element of the app, available for Android and Apple tablets, is you don’t have to watch the show in real-time to get access to exclusive content. The sync feature will work if you chose to get some rest and DVR the show. Just cue up the DVR at your convenience with tablet in hand and let the “Techno Magic” (Conan’s verbiage) go to work.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of Late Night reacts to Conan’s gamification move. Will Leno or Letterman jump into the two screen era? Probably not when you consider their older demographics. However, Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel’s young tweeps seem to be seriously socially connected with smart devices and maybe waiting for the update to their Late Night apps.
What are your thoughts? Are people ready for twice the funny of Conan’s “String Dance”?
