Banco Sabadell – Coin-operated orchestra

This bonus example is not exactly a vending machine, but it captured the hearts of many when a Spanish bank celebrated its 130th anniversary by setting up an on-demand musical flash-mob. 100 musicians and singers hid in the town square of Sabadell, while a single bass-player was waiting for a trigger – a bystander to drop a coin into his hat. He then started playing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” (also the anthem of the European Union) as other musicians and the choir joined in. The Internet dubbed this campaign “best coin ever spent”:
