The Original “X PRIZE”

Just a fun fact for this lovely Friday. In 1919, Raymond Orteig offered a prize of $25,000 for the first nonstop aircraft flight between New York and Paris. The Orteig Prize was the early 20th century equivalent to X PRIZE’s Ansari Challenge. Competitions like these that are used for grand innovation are fantastic examples of gamification. Without them, Captain Charles Lindbergh would not have won that prize of flying from NY to Paris on May 20-21, 1927.
